Stirling
The city of Stirling grew up at one of the most strategic locations in Scotland, at what was for a long time the lowest crossing point of the River Forth. The Old Bridge, dating from about 1400, is still very much in use by pedestrians. This crossing was overlooked by a steep crag, guarded by a castle which dominates the surrounding flood plain. Several historic houses remain on the streets which wind their way down the gentler side of the crag. On the opposite side of the river the 67 metre high National Wallace Monument adorns the top of another outcrop, Abbey Craig. The ascent to the top is well worthwhile, with impressive views along the entire length of the Forth valley.
