Glasgow
Straddling the great River Clyde, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and largest commercial centre, with a proud industrial and engineering heritage and a legacy of strong trans-Atlantic trading links. This enabled some of its citizens to accumulate great wealth, which was ostentatiously displayed in grand civic and commercial buildings and palatial private residences, particularly during the boom years of the Victorian era. However, the majority of its population lived in far less salubrious conditions which have only gradually been addressed. Glasgow is truly a city of remarkable contrasts. But it is also a city of great energy and creativity which is renowned for artistic and cultural innovation and an ability to constantly move on and re-invent itself.
