Often graceful as well as functional, they are by their nature to be found at strategic locations on the transport network, providing vital links between communities and obviating the need for time-consuming ferry crossings or long detours. It is no accident that bridges were often the site of major military campaigns in the past, as at Stirling Bridge and Bothwell.
