South Uist
Some 22 miles long by 8 miles wide, South UIst is an island of big skies, big beaches and big hills. The Atlantic west coast comprises one long beach, interrupted only by a couple of promontories. This is backed by dunes and 'machair' (calceum rich grassland), and a succession of scenic zones starting with croft land, progressing eastwards through moorland and mountains to the rocky and indented east coast.
