Rhum
Rhum – more commonly spelled as ‘Rum’ nowadays – once had a reputation as the ‘forbidden island’ when it was run as a private shooting estate. It is now owned by Scottish Natural Heritage and is a centre for ecological research. A wild and mountainous island, it has only a small population clustered in the tiny settlement at Kinloch. Kinloch Castle is an imposing but anomalous relic of the Edwardian era, its luxurious but fading grandeur contasting with the ruggedness of the surrounding hills.
