Islay
Islay is world renowned for its whisky, with a total of 9 distilleries now operational on the island. Each has its own distinctive characteristics. Those produced on the south east coast are particularly noted for their smoky aroma, derived from the local peat. Many visitors also converge on Islay to observe its rich variety of wildlife – especially birds – and to see some of the most important historic sites in Scotland, including carved celtic crosses and the power base of the former Lords of the Isles. The scenery ranges from wild and remote moorland and cliffs to fertile farmland, idyllic beaches, sheltered woodland and pretty whitewashed villages.
