Kintail and Lochalsh
The road to Skye winds its way between long, sweeping mountain ridges and along the edge of deep penetrating sea lochs which characterise Kintail and Lochalsh. The area lays claim to one of the highest concentrations of 'munros' in Scotland - perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy a challenge. The coastal fringe is studded with picturesque villages and crofting settlements which contrast with the wild and remote hinterland. In 1719 this rugged terrain was the site of a pitched battle in which an alliance of Jacobite and Spansish troops was defeated by British government forces (Battle of Glenshiel).
