Applecross
Although lacking in ‘munros’, the Applecross peninsula is wild and rugged, with just a few small crofting and fishing settlements nestling in sheltered bays around the coast. Until relatively recently these were generally accessed by boat or a long walk over the hills. Now they are linked by a coastal road and can also be reached – at least in summer – by Britain’s steepest mountain pass, the famous Bealach na Ba. The road to the Bealach (which was only tarmaced in the 1960s), zig-zags from sea level to 2,053 ft. in 5.7 miles.
