Edinburgh’s skyline is punctuated by numerous domes and spires which help to reinforce the city’s distinctive profile, with its strong vertical elements. Domes, spires, obelisks, columns and turrets are also important landmarks which are often deliberately aligned with the street layout, and help to orientate the visitor. Such features are particularly striking when seen in silhouette, caught in the rays of the setting sun, or when illuminated after dark.
